When the weather starts to heat up that marks the beginning of the outdoor entertaining season. That means long, hot days and nights and more pesky mosquitoes. We’re here to give you the tips you need to keep those mosquitoes at bay.

How to Keep Mosquitoes Away

Getting rid of mosquitoes isn’t always easy. Unfortunately, some people are simply more prone to mosquito bites than others. For example, pregnant women and those with Type O blood (according to this study) are a favorite amongst mosquitoes. Actually, 85% of mosquitoes’ attraction has to do with genetics, which we can’t even control!

However, here are seven things we can control that will help to keep us protected this mosquito season.

  • Avoid Wearing Dark Colors

You should avoid wearing dark colors such as Black, navy, and red. When mosquitoes are looking for someone to prey on, it’s easier for them to spot darker colors compared to lighter ones.

These dark colors can attract the Aedes aegypti mosquito.

Does this mean wearing light-colored clothing makes you completely immune to mosquito bites? No, however, it is one factor that can help keep mosquitoes at bay.

  • Cut Back On The Alcohol Intake

I know this one might be difficult during summer, but if you don’t want to be harassed by mosquitoes you need to limit your alcohol intake. While rubbing alcohol can repel and kill mosquitoes, studies by the American Mosquito Control Association (AMCA) show that even one beer can boost your risk of being bitten.

  • Read Your Skincare Labels

It’s important to take the time to read your skincare labels carefully before using them if you’re going to be spending time outside. Keep mosquitoes away by avoiding moisturizers that contain lactic acid or alpha hydroxy acids, as these are known to attract mosquitoes.

  • Keep Your Feet Clean

You should be doing this regardless of mosquitoes, but it’s essential to keep your feet clean for good hygiene and to also keep mosquitoes away from you. Smelly feet are irresistible to mosquitoes! The bacteria that grow on our feet draw them in, so keep those feet clean and change your socks regularly.

  • Wear a Natural Mosquito Repellent

Wearing natural mosquito repellent is another way to keep mosquitoes at bay. Natural repellents made from essential oils like citronella, eucalyptus, tea tree, peppermint, cypress, rose geranium, and lemon can be very effective.

Mosquito Magician’s mosquito repellent formula uses some of the essential oils above, plus garlic, rosemary, cedar, and geraniol to keep mosquitoes away.

  • Clean Up Your Yard

To get rid of mosquitoes in your yard it’s important to keep it as clean as possible. Make sure to empty any standing water in your yard and keep your lawn and surrounding trees and bushes trimmed. It only takes one inch (!) of water for mosquitoes to breed in it. Make sure to check for water in flower pots, old tires, wagons, buckets, etc.

In addition to keeping your yard clean, using a mosquito killer and repellent spray is vital to keeping mosquitoes at bay. Our formula contains 6 natural essential oil active ingredients, so it’s completely safe for pets and kids when used as directed.

  • Avoid Going Out During Peak Mosquito Hours

If you are trying to stay away from mosquitoes, you should avoid going outdoors from sunset to sunrise. This time of day is considered peak mosquito hours, as it’s when mosquitoes are the most active.

Temperature also plays a factor in when mosquitoes are the most active. When the temperature drops below 60℉, mosquitoes become lethargic. At temperatures below 50℉, they have a hard time trying to survive due to their cold blooded-nature.

It’s essential to know what time of the day mosquitoes are the most active. If you avoid going outside during these hours, the chance of you being bitten by a mosquito is significantly lower.

How Do I Keep Mosquitoes From Biting Me?

There are a lot of different ways to avoid mosquito bites, but the number one way is to wear mosquito repellent. It’s important to do research and make sure the mosquito repellent you choose is natural, safe, and effective before you use it.

If you like to sit on your porch or balcony during the summer, it’s easy for mosquitoes to sneak in. Make sure you get rid of mosquitoes inside your house — this includes putting a screen up to prevent the insects from invading your home, eliminating sources of standing water, and repelling them with scents they can’t stand.

What Scent Keeps Mosquitoes Away?

There are certain oils and plants that naturally repel mosquitoes. Here are some of the natural scents that will keep them at bay:

Essential Oils That Keep Mosquitoes Away:

  • Lemon
  • Lavender
  • Peppermint
  • Cinnamon

Studies have shown essential oils are effective at keeping mosquitoes away. They can be used either topically when diluted with a carrier oil (such as coconut oil) or by diffusing them throughout your home. You could also combine them into a powerful mosquito-repellent spray!

Plants That Repel Mosquitoes:

  • Lavender
  • Basil
  • Rosemary
  • Citronella

There are a variety of plants that keep mosquitoes away because of their strong odors. Whether you need to keep mosquitoes out of your house or out of your yard, there are mosquito-repellent plants that fit your needs.

Can Vinegar Repel Mosquitoes?

Yes! Vinegar is a great option for repelling mosquitoes and other insects — apple cider vinegar and red vinegar are the best kinds to use. The main reason vinegar works so well at repelling mosquitoes is because of its powerful smell.

While all vinegar is great at repelling mosquitoes, for white vinegar to be 100% effective it must be mixed with water.
