Plants (and their essential oils!) are a GREAT way to naturally repel mosquitoes. With so many options out there, how do you know what actually works? We’re here to help you find out.

Today, we’re looking at whether or not eucalyptus repels mosquitoes. We’ve researched natural mosquito repellents, and we’re here to help answer your questions!

Does Eucalyptus Repel Mosquitoes?

Yes! According to the Center for Disease Control (CDC), eucalyptus is one of the most effective mosquito repellents.

In general, there are two plants used for sourcing eucalyptus oil: Eucalyptus globulus (southern blue gum) and Corymbia citriodora (lemon eucalyptus) Eucalyptus oil is shown to be 72% effective at repelling certain species of mosquito over a two hour period, while lemon eucalyptus proved to be about 97% effective!

One study from 2011 found that lemon eucalyptus oil, at a 30% dilution rate, produces 90-96% repellency rates, depending on the species of mosquito. It also protected users for 4-6 hours.

Is Eucalyptus Oil as Effective as DEET?

It certainly seems to be! One study by NMSU researchers found that products containing lemon eucalyptus oil were almost as effective and long-lasting as DEET. So, instead of spraying your clothes with DEET or buying mosquito-proof clothing, consider using eucalyptus oil!

Not only is it safe to use on your body and around the house, it doesn’t pose any health risks to you or your family. However, you do need to be careful using it around pets, as both the plant’s leaves and essential oil are toxic to dogs and cats. Plus, the scent of eucalyptus is also effective for repelling cockroaches, wasps, and flies.

Why Does Eucalyptus Repel Mosquitoes?

Like peppermint, eucalyptus has a potency that affects a mosquito’s senses.

Eucalyptus is also made up of para-menthane-3,8-diol, which contains pesticide properties. These components cause mosquitoes to go “nose-blind” because they mask the smell of carbon dioxide and lactic acid – the human-emitted scents that attract mosquitoes!

How Do You Use Eucalyptus Oil to Repel Mosquitoes?

Mosquito repellent sprays that contain eucalyptus or lemon eucalyptus oil are the most effective for naturally repelling mosquitoes. In fact, several brands have developed lemon eucalyptus oil sprays marketed for their effectiveness, scent, and lack of residue. One study found that a 32% lemon eucalyptus oil solution provided 95% protection for about three hours.

While the presence of the plant itself will repel mosquitoes, you can use dilute eucalyptus oil to apply it topically, spray it to deter mosquitoes in your house, or disperse it with an essential oil diffuser.

Which Essential Oil is Best to Repel Mosquitoes?

While eucalyptus is clearly an effective mosquito repellent, there are other essential oils that repel mosquitoes, including:

  • Citronella
  • Peppermint
  • Basil
  • Catnip
  • Lemon
